After watching episode 1 of K-ON, I have to say it was better than I expected. It had the same light-hearted comedy feel to it as Hyakko, probably because Ritsu and Yui have similar personalities to Torako and Ayumi respectively. With this kind of anime, it’s really the personalities of the characters that draw you in rather than the plot (since there usually isn’t really any plot), but there’s plenty of room for a good story to develop. After all, the series is about the formation of a band, and every story about a band always ends with them becoming famous somehow.

I haven’t read the K-ON manga, but from the looks of it, the series will probably see the four main characters (Ritsu, Mio, Tsumugi, and Yui) improve their music playing skills and end with a big concert or something (a perfect oppurtunity to sell tons of CDs to K-ON fans). Out of the four band members, my favourite character would have to be Mio (the bassist), mainly because she looks so cute during the ending song. She can also defy gravity as can be seen by looking at the position of her hat:

Yui (the guitarist) would have to be my second-favourite character, she’s so clumsy and spaces out a lot, it reminds me of myself :D

Tsumugi (the keyboardist) reminds me of Ryoko Asakura from Haruhi. I think it’s because of the thick eyebrows and her down-to-earth personality.

Ritsu (the drummer) is the hyper one in the group. I usually don’t like the hyper characters in anime, but she plays the drums so she’s fine in my books :)

As for the animation quality in K-ON, all I can say is that it’s great, as expected from a Kyoto Animation production. From the opening and ending songs the music for the series looks like it will turn out well and should be something to look forward to, hopefully there will be more than just a few insert songs.
