Volume 15 of Nyantype came out a while ago, but I haven’t had time to get around to it until now. The cover features the adorable Nymph from Sora no Otoshimono. The posters this time around cover characters from series from both last season and the current season. As always, ecchi images are linked and not directly displayed.
One of the series that I was following in the Fall 2010 season but didn’t finish until recently was Yosuga no Sora. I don’t think it needs an introduction, but for those of you who haven’t heard of it, it’s an anime adaptation of a visual novel that kept the H-scenes. Many people disregarded the series as pure fanservice or softcore porn, but I kept watching it because of the excellent animation, and I’m glad I did.
Yes, there is sex, and yes, that initially pushed me away from this series, but looking back, it actually wasn’t that bad. There is no genitallia anywhere in the series; the most skin that is shown are some bare breasts, and considering bare breasts are perfectly legal in public (according to this famous court case) and common to other media, I don’t consider this series any more pornographic than a Hollywood film. Once you get past the “oh my gosh, this is so dirty” phase, you can start to enjoy the great story.
I was actually very confused after the first few arcs with how the characters acted between themselves. This was all cleared up when someone pointed out to me that each arc is actually a different timeline, but each timeline contains some similar events from the previous arc. Actually, the anime is set up like a visual novel more than anything, where some scenes are repeated only within certain routes. It’s a nice way of telling the story for all of the visual novel fans, but I think I would’ve preferrred a more linear format.
As I pointed out in a previous post, Yosuga no Sora has very well thought-out characters and plenty of drama to go around. With all of the jealously, hatred, anger, sadness, love, and lust, there is sure to be something shocking for everyone. The anime is actually like those soap operas that housewives watch during the day. You know the ones I’m talking about: where person A is going out with B, much to the envy of C, then A suddenly dies and B gets with C, but A is revived and goes out with D while B tries to get back with A, oh and D has a secret crush on C. Yeah, Yosuga no Sora isn’t as complicated as that (just barely), but all of the emotional turmoil is there. All of the tense moments between Kazuha/Akira and Nao/Sora/the class president (I forgot her name) were really well done. The sex scenes also played a major role in advancing the plot because you simply can’t get any more of a shock factor than a character walking in on her rival raping her love interest or making out on the floor.
While the main selling point of Yosuga no Sora seemed to be taboo relationships, there was actually very little content dealing with that. The yuri relationship between Kazuha and Akira never develops past a forced kiss, and even the brother x sister relationship between Haruka and Sora seemed sidelined by the flood of emotions that the characters feel. The only real resistance to the twincest comes from the class president, who preaches about morals and ethics to Haruka, although it is implied that she is less concerned that Haruka is making out with his twin sister and more concerned that the guy she likes has someone else. In my view, the writers really dropped the ball here. They had so much potential to turn the anime into a serious look at taboo relationships but decided to make it into a regular love triangle (or whatever other polygon you prefer).
So while Yosuga no Sora does have good animation, plot, and characters going for it, the lack of anything extra makes it less than what it could’ve been. Rather than being a great drama, it turned out to be a condensed soap opera starring high schoolers. It was still enjoyable though, as the drama that unfolds and all of the plot twists will keep you on your feet.
February is going to end in less than 2 hours so I figured I’d get this post on the February 2011 issue of Megami Magazine up, also known as volume 129. With Madoka dominating the anime scene this season, it’s no surprise that she’s the cover girl of this issue. She’s even holding onto a heart-shaped box, which I guess was for Valentine’s Day. There’s actually quite a bit of ecchi in here, but as usual, ecchi posters will be linked rather than shown directly. Since I’m tired and sick today, this’ll be a short post.
It seems I forgot to write about Megami Magazine Vol. 128 last month, so this will be the first of 2 Megami posts this week. As with a large portion of Megami volumes past, Nanoha has once again invaded the cover of the magazine. The occasion this time is the announcement of Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A’s The Movie 2nd. Since I enjoyed the first movie, and I think the A’s series is better than the original, I’m really looking forward to the second movie.
The posters in the volume has a mix of characters from both the previous 2010 fall season and the current 2011 winter season. I was quite happy with the selection. Ecchi (ages 15+) images are linked, click at your own discretion.
It looks like I’m behind on magazine posts again, so it’s time to catch up. Volume 14 of Nyantype Magazine is very Nanoha-centric as you can probably guess from the cover page. This is mainly because this volume came out around the time the Nanoha movie came out on BD/DVD. As with my previous magazine post, very ecchi images will be linked. After what has felt like ages, I can finally get back to making regular posts again. My computer is all fixed and I don’t have anything I need to complete until February (yay). Today I have here the 127th volume of Megami Magazine, also known as the December 2010 issue.
Normally you’d think that a bishoujo magazine released in December would have a lot of girls in sexy Santa outfits, but Megami has a different take on things. Since December is one of the coldest months of the year (if you live in the northern hemisphere), Megami was nice enough to include lots of images to help warm you up, including beach and swimsuit ones. As usual, ecchi images aren’t shown directly (in case someone peeks over your shoulder), but now I’ve included links to each one to make it easier to get to.
Misaka Mikoto (aka biribiri, railgun) from To Aru Majutsu no Index II and To Aru Kagaku no Railgun makes her first Nyantype cover appearance on volume 13. I’m a bit surprised that they didn’t go for a 4th Nanoha cover considering the Nanoha movie just came out on Blu-ray/DVD, but I guess having a third of your covers be from a single series would be too much.
While Nyantype Magazine started out with rather poor quality pin-up posters, it seems that they’re finally starting to get the hang of it with some pretty decent ones in volume 12. The cover features Yoshika and Mio from Strike Witches.
The cover of Megami Magazine Vol. 126 has both Index and Misaka on the cover. At first I thought that Misaka might have been the mini-Misaka that accelerator is taking care of because of her red cheeks and overly happy look. A closer look reveals that she’s wearing shorts under her skirt though, indicating that she’s the railgun.
