One of the things that I like about anime that is largely absent in western cartoons (or it was when I was a kid), is that it’s not afraid to kill off a character in order to drive the story. Sometimes these deaths make viewers cry, other times they create mobs of angry fans. Either way, they completely draw in the attention and bring out the emotions of any viewer, ensuring the series will always have people to remember it. Here are just 10 deaths which I thought were excellently done and helped make the series. The videos are the closest I could find of the actual scenes.

Note: I think this is obvious, but spoilers are below. If you haven’t seen but intend to see Mai-Hime, Death Note, Evangelion, Madoka, Nadesico, Gurren Lagann, Clannad After Story, Katanagatari, Code Geass, or Kodomo no Jikan and don’t want to be spoiled, don’t scroll down. Also, before anyone asks “where’s Spike?” I have yet to finish Cowboy Bebop.

Death #1: Takumi Tokiha (Mai-Hime)

Takumi is the younger brother of the main character, Mai Tokiha. He was a weakling with no real fighting abilities and his death was anything but spectacular. What made it so instrumental though, was what happened immediately afterwards. Mai had been the messenger of peace for the entire series up until that point. Once Takumi passed away, she went totally berserk and in a fit of rage, called up Kagutsuchi and set ablaze everything around her before supposedly burning Mikoto to a crisp. Mai was the greatest proponent of pacifism, and when she defeated another Hime, it was as if the world turned upside down and the whole series spiralled into a dog-eat-dog world with no mercy.

Death #2: L (Death Note)

When L finally kicked the bucket, I think everyone just went silent for a few minutes until rage finally set in. I mean, c’mon, how could you kill one of the players in a 2-person game of cat and mouse? While I’m sure everyone was upset about L, it paved the way for both him and Light to meet their demise without either one being better than the other (since Light never actually discovered L’s name). If either character had “won”, half of the Death Note fan base would have been up in arms.

Death #3: Asuka Langley Soryu (End of Evangelion)

Asuka’s method of death by itself was already more gruesome than most people can imagine. What had a greater impact was that Shinji just stood by and did nothing (that bastard) while Asuka was being torn to pieces. At this point, everyone just hates Shinji with all of their heart, which is why the ending felt like such a relief when he finally made 1 good decision.

Death #4: Mami Tomoe (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

As of this writing, everyone, even those who haven’t seen Madoka, knows of Mami’s death. If this article survives the test of time though, here’s a short explanation. Up until this point, Madoka was a cool mahou shoujo series with bubbly characters and some drama between them. Mami was everyone’s favourite because she was a busty, gun-toting, badass that obliterated witches with a smile on her face. Imagine the shock in episode 3 when out on a typical witch hunt, she gets her head ripped off and you hear munching sounds in the background as a witch devours her body. That’s when everyone realized that no, this wasn’t a happy “let’s hunt some witches for fun” series, it was Kyubeyland.

Death #5: Gai Daigoji (Martian Successor Nadesico)

Personally, I think the creators of Madoka stole this element from Nadesico. Before Gai’s death, Nadesico was about a wacky, happy-go-lucky crew of a civilian battleship with a mission to go to Mars and rescue any people trapped there after the invasion of the Jovian Lizards. Gai was everyone’s favourite because he was an ace pilot that loved to collect gunpla and made everyone laugh. Imagine the shock in episode 3 when out on a walk through the hangar deck, he gets shot dead by some escaping military prisoners. That’s when everyone realized that no, this wasn’t a happy “let’s go save the world” series, it was a deep drama focused on the human condition, where the greater enemies come from within than from without.

Death #6: Kamina (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)

Kamina, the hero of all heroes, leader of all leaders, and player of all players was taken down in episode 8. For someone so seemingly invincible to be taken out so early was a huge psychological blow to the rebellion in TTGL. It also opened up the anime for the other characters to shine in the spotlight, overcoming whatever is thrown their way and “piercing the heavens.” If Kamina had not died, TTGL would not have seemed as much of an anime about perseverance and GAR because Kamina would’ve just made everything too easy.

Death #7: Ushio Okazaki (Clannad After Story)

I had a suspicion that Key wouldn’t actually let Ushio die, but my gosh, when they showed that scene I nearly cried. Imagine having your lover die on you after only a few short years and leaving behind your only child. Not having enough time or money, she gets neglected and falls ill. Then, no matter how hard you try to fulfill her last wishes, she passes away in your arms. This doesn’t have an effect on the characters since it’s only a magical dream world, but it really brought out the emotions. I’m sure Tomoya would make an excellent father with Nagisa there to support him.

Death #8: Togame (Katanagatari)

There were quite a few scenes in Katanagatari that alluded to Togame’s death, but I was still shocked when it actually happened. I know it had to have happened or else Togame would have killed Shichika later, but I would like to think she would choose love over personal gain. At least it made Shichika go berserk and made some awesome ending fights.

Death #9: Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass R2)

Lelouch was my hero in the first season of Code Geass, he was cunning, ambitious, and took advantage of every opportunity that arose regardless of the ethical or moral issues. That’s why when he finally dominated the world, I was utterly speechless to see him plan and carry out his own death, it was absurd. Lelouch was no hero, I think he should have fallen due to his own folly (divine justice), not something that he planned. For me, this is one of the most shocking deaths in anime because of how he died.

Death #10: Aki Kokonoe (Kodomo no Jikan)

When I saw I liked Kodomo no Jikan, I’m not saying I liked Kodomo no Jikan. I’m saying that I liked episode 6 of the first season, where the teacher doesn’t even make an appearance and Rin is just a minor character. This episode was by far one of the most memorable episodes of all the anime I’ve ever watched and could actually be viewed without watching any of the others. The whole episode focused around Aki ane Reiji, cousins who fell in love with each other. The problem was that Aki was an ill single mother who could barely take care of herself much less her daughter. It was heartbreaking to see Reiji and Aki falling in love with each other even though they knew Aki was running out of time. The scene of Rin folding paper cranes beside her mother’s withered corpse made my heart wrench.

The 110th volume of Megami Magazine features Saki and Nodoka from the mahjong anime “Saki” on the front cover. I’m not following Saki right now, but from the images that I’ve seen it looks like more than just mahjong goes on in the anime.

The posters this time around were pretty nice, as you can see below:

On the first page are the moe girls of K-ON. Personally, I liked Mio at the start, but by the end of the series, my favourite character had shifted to Mugi. It makes me sad that they decided not to include her in this poster :(

Like I said before, I really liked the animation in Tayutama, but the story just couldn’t keep me watching so it’s nice to get some posters I can put on my wall.

Yay for Haruhi-chan!

I haven’t seen Basquash before, but from the size of those oppai, I’m guessing there’s quite a bit of fanservice in it.

It’s funny how there seems to be so many more female fighters in Valkyria Chronicles than in real life. I’m not complaining though, especially if there’s more Alicia.

Yoko doing cosplay is always a plus. I like the chinese dress best out of the four. In case you’re wondering where all the costumes are from, it’s actually from Yoko’s first album which you can read about here.

Here’s the first of the Saki posters in this volume. It looks like it belongs on a dakimakura instead of a poster, but I like it, she looks so cute with those bunny ears.

On the reverse side of the bunny ear girl are the girls from Queen’s Blade. Strangely enough, even though they’re in bathing suits on the beach, they don’t seem to be flashing as much skin as in the anime.

I can’t wait for the Kowarekake no Orgol anime to come out. If any of you don’t know what it is, it’s basically something being put together by amateurs (not a production studio) that has a similar story to Chobits. From the trailers on youtube, the animation quality looks even better than some work that actual anime studios have put out.

This volume’s Girls Avenue girl has some big assets :)

I wonder how those two can stand the smell of wet dog.

This is the image that they used on the from cover of the magazine. Unfortunately, they decided to just use a generic background which is a bit upsetting. They could have at least drawn in some scenery or something.

Ever play strip poker? what about strip mahjong? Here’s undeniable proof that there’s more going on in Saki than just mahjong playing. Poor Nodoka looks like she lost a few too many times.

I’m not sure what’s up with this duck outfit, it looks kinda weird.

In the non-poster parts of the magazine there’s some stats and bios of all the Queen’s Blade characters. I’m sure fans would like to know the actual measurements of their favourite girls.

I still haven’t gotten around to watching the second season of Hayate no Gotoku 2, but it looks like Hinagiku is in it quite a bit, all the more reason to watch it soon.

In case anyone was wondering what the voices behind the characters of K-ON actually look like, here they are.

There was no large poster in this volume, but I did get some nice K-ON stickers instead (oh joy -.-).

Some info on Kowarekake no Orgol, which will be coming out this summer.

Weib Schwarz really does have a lot of advertisements. I’m thinking of actually getting some cards now, they look nice, and the gameplay is explained in the anime Weib Survive (Weiss Survive).

Utawarerumono fans probably already know this, but the OVA came out last month.

Besides not having Mugi in a poster, and replacing the regular large poster with some stickers, I actually liked this volume. My favourite posters would be the Tayutama one, the one of Yoko, the bunny-ears girl, and the Kowarekake no Orgol one.

After much searching and some waiting, I was able to get a hold on a copy of Nyantype Magazine volume 1 (unfortunately, it’s a bit damaged from shipping). Since it is the first volume I guess a lot of people wanted it to see is it was any good, making it really hard for me to find. Much like Megami Magazine (it’s actually a near carbon copy), Nyantype has a number of pinup posters at the front and back of the magazine with info on anime, games, and figures in between. To start off,  here are all the pinup posters included in the magazine:

I’m sure anyone out there with a foot fetish would live this Haruhi poster.

This one of Haruhi, Mikuru, and Yuki really looks like it would make a good dakimura. Maybe they’ve already made one.

Out of all the new characters in Nanoha Strikers, the only one I actually liked  was Teana.

I’m sure there’s many guys out there who would swap “guns” with Yoko right now.

I really like the character designs for Tayutama, but I just couldn’t stand the story. Oh well, I’ll just have to enjoy posters like this one instead :)

It always seems like Ein is being molested by someone.

Rin, Kuro, and Mimi from pedo anime Kodomo no Jikan also make an appearance. It’s scary to think that Mimi is only in elementary school…

The dreaded steam/fog commonly found in Megami Magazine also seems to have infected Nyantype magazine.

Ako (left) and Riko (right) seem to have gone back to their panty-flashing ways after an encounter with some slimy tentacles.

I always thought Riannon was an innocent looking girl, but looks can be deceiving, just look where her left hand is.

If the proportion of cute girls in Valkyria Chronicles was actually representative of the military, I’d sign up in an instant.

Out of all the pinup posters, I’d say my favourite is the Tayutama one even though I don’t watch the anime. The one with Haruhi, Mikuru, and Yuki in bed was also nice.

Like Megami Magazine, Nyantype Magazine also has news on popular anime and anything anime related:

On the first pages of the magazine is an ad for Yoko’s (Gurren Lagann) new single “Pieces of Sweet Stars” which was released on May 27. The single comes with some nice Yoko pics and a music video which you can see on youtube.

Of course, any magazine that focues on bishoujo characters must include Nanoha. Still waiting for the new movie to come out.

There’s also a short section in the magazine that lists all the new upcoming anime for summer 2009. Canaan looks pretty good so I’ll be looking forward to that.

Another similarity between Nyantype and Megami is these little manga inserts.

One thing that Nyantype has included that isn’t in Megami are these non-poster full-page images. It’d be a bit hard to cut these ones out to stick on your wall, but they’re still nice to look at.

Near the end of the magazine is also a section devoted to bishoujo games.

At the very back is something that regular readers of Megami Magazine would be familiar with by now: Weib Schwarz trading cards ads.

This volume came with a free card of the adult version of Nanoha.

The back of Nyantype Magazine just has some ads for Minami-ke and Tora Dora.

Overall, I thought Nyantype Magazine was worth the $15+shipping, but I think Megami Magazine is just a bit better. Why you ask? Althought Nyantype Magazine is almost an exact copy of Megami Magazine, there is one big difference: it has no size B2 poster included. I know a lot of people get these magazines for the posters, and when it comes to posters, the bigger the better.

Time for a look at another volume of Megami Magazine. This issue has a lot of goodies in terms of posters, and some very very nice extras which you will find near the bottom of this post.

Haven’t seen one of these larger posters in a while. The front features Kyou and Ryou Fujibayashi from Clannad.

On the reverse side are the girls from everyone’s favourite anime this season, K-ON. After seeing Mugi-chan in a nurse costume and here in a maid costume, I have concluded that she should be a professional cosplayer. Poor Mio looks so embarrassed.

I wonder how Nodoka is able to keep that towel around herself.

I finally have the Taiga nopan poster ^.^

Queen’s Blade is too much ecchi and not enough story for my tastes.

I watched the first episode of Asura Cryin and it just looked like an amalgamation of every anime genre possible: supernatural, magic, mystery, adventure, mecha, ninjas, etc.

Nice poster of the girls from Tayutama.

Not sure which anime this is from, but I like the girl on the left (pink hair is always a plus).

I thought this was a very nice poster of Fate and Teana. I think Teana looks better with her hair down.

I was too busy looking at the girl to notice the huge number of cats in the background at first.

Currently enjoying Natsu no Arashi, but I wish the animation was a bit better.

Yoko’s right oppai looks really deformed with the strap like that…

It looks like Ein doesn’t go anywhere without her gun.

Second episode of Kissxsis comes out on May 22.

I really like this Higurashi poster. I wish the Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Rei OVA episodes would be released sooner.

One more Nagi poster for all the Kannagi fans.

I liked the variety of posters that they had this time around. Only K-ON had more than one poster so there’s sure to be something for everyone in this volume. I also liked how they included past, current, and upcoming series this time. On to more of the magazine itself:

Looking forward to To Aru Kagaku no Railgun. More Mikoto and Kuroko ftw (though I actually like Kuroko more than Mikoto).

Can’t wait for the new Nanoha movie to come out.

I just love Fate’s pose on this page.

I read the Hatsukoi Limited manga, and although it was easy to get lost in all the characters, it was still enjoyable. I would have to say my favourite character is Koyoi.

I did not know that the school swimsuit mecha nurse girl nana figure was cast-offable >.>

Episode 3 of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei is almost out, only 1 more week! The 3rd and 4th episodes will be released on June 24 and August 21 respectively.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, this volume came with some very nice extras, and here they are:

First is a Nanoha pencil board, with Nanoha on one side

and Fate on the other. I really love Fate’s pose, hope they make a poster of it in the future.

The other extra that came with this volume is Megami Magazine’s volume 1.5 of the Nanoha Visual Collection. Since it’s volume 1.5, there aren’t as many pics as a full volume, but they’re still really nice. Resized scans are below, the originals were too huge, but if enough people want them then I might post them somewhere.

This is definitely one of the better Megami Magazines I’ve seen (maybe even the best). Lots of variety to appeal to a larger audience, and although there was no large poster this time, I thought the Nanoha goodies more than made up for that. If you’re planning on buying a Megami Magazine, I would recommend volume 109.

This nendoroid of Yoko from Gurren Lagann must be one of the best nendoroids ever. Not only does she come with her sniper rifle, she has so many extra parts that you can make almost any pose you want. Not to mention that the top and bottom half of her body are also separated so you can move her torso to the side a bit, which isn’t possible with other nendoroids.

I literally spent hours playing around with all of the pieces and seeing which poses looked best. I took some pictures of a few of them here:

This is how Yoko looks out of the box. I initially had some trouble positioning the stand so it looks like she’s just floating there.

FEED ME! (j/k), Yoko’s sniper rifle is split into three different pieces so that you can attach a strap onto it. The strap is made out of plastic, but it’s really flexible so you don’t need to worry about snaping it. The only problem I had with positioning the gun was that the stand was in the way so I couldn’t have Yoko carry the gun with the barrel pointing up a bit more.

I didn’t notice at first, but one of Yoko’s hands has a hole in it where a peg from the gun is supposed to fit. This allows her to hold on to it without it falling off. I also noticed that the inside barrel of the gun isn’t painted, which is unfortunate, but I guess it’d be really hard to paint the inside of such a small hole.

I’m sure someone can come up with a good caption for this picture ;)

This last pose is my favourite, I actually didn’t like Yoko’s angry face very much, and the kinda sad-looking/begging face just looks weird on a nendoroid.

The magical girl wand part in Kannagi was pretty funny, but I didn’t think the anime had a very good plotline. Knowing anime, Nagi will end up falling in love with the male character and they will have to overcome some obstacle to stay together.

When I see a poster like this one I just have to wonder how this situation came about. I remember both Ilcocoo and Tabitha were naked at some point in Zero no Tsukaima, but not naked and in aprons >.>

I wonder why Emuemu carries around a tranquilizer gun when she fights robots…

A cute witch reminding us that Halloweeen is just around the corner.

The “ef” series has nice artwork, but I can never get into the story, I always end up falling asleep.

Clannad posters are always good. I loved how Kotomi calculated where the pitcher was going to throw the ball when she was at bat in the first episode of After Story.

I wonder if they’ll explain the purpose of the girl and the robot any time soon.

I’ve never heard of Zettai Shougeki – Platinic Heart, but I see a nurse uniform and police uniform so it’s gotta be somewhat good, right?

When you compare Tanarot to other characters, she looks like some kind of midget, or a really developed little girl.

I’m still waiting for subs for Jigoku Shoujo Mitsuganae :(

I didn’t think Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka left much of an impact. It looks just like your average harem anime.

This volume of Megami Magazine had several pages dedicated to Clannad After Story. No clue what any of it said, but here’s one of the pages.

Maybe there’s something in there explaining the girl and the robot. I wish I could read Japanese :(

Looks like some general information on Tora Dora and some character stats. Takasu’s mother looks more like she’s in her 20′s rather than a mother of a teenager.

Kannagi and Kemeko Deluxe with more character stats. I wonder how Emuemu fits inside Kemeko, it’s not physically possible :/

Yozakura Quartet and Macademi Wasshoi. I don’t remember seeing that green-haired girl in Macademi, maybe she’ll show up later.

Strike Witches, I haven’t seen this series, but I have seen lots of screenshots and random images, and I have one question: Does anyone wear pants?

Like the last volume, this one also has some Zero no Tsukaima manga to read.

It looks like rumours of a bonus Code Geass episode were false, but hey, at least C.C. is still around.

There was so much hype over the Lucky Star OVA, but I thought it was just like any other episode of Lucky Star (not saying it was bad, I was just hoping for more). I guess part of the reason why I wasn’t “wowed” by the OVA was because there was so much info released about it beforehand that you were pretty much expecting everything that happened to happen.

Like the last volume, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni was again on the back of the magazine. Unfortunately, this time it comes with bad news. It looks like the release dates for the OVA have been pushed back, so the first dvd will be released on Feb. 25, 2009 rather than Dec. 26, 2008.

I mentioned that I also got a JAST USA catalog with my magazine and here it is. On one side is a list of some dating-sims and eroge (there’s actually quite a number of eroge), and on the other side is a poster of some girls, one of which is naked. It’s amazing how all of her parts have remained covered in this poster.

There was also that JAST card along with the brochure. Now, I think JAST just sells games so I was wondering what kind of trading card they would have, and when I opened the little packet, I found this:

Needless to say, the card kinda took me by surprise. I don’t even know what to do with it now. If anyone is collecting these and wants my card, I’d be happy to mail it anywhere in Canada.

Last but not least is the large poster that comes with every volume of Megami Magazine:

This time the poster is a long, thin one rather than a regular sized poster. On one side is Nagisa from Clannad in her PJs.

On the other side is my favourite clannad character , Kotomi, wearing a pretty white dress. I had been hoping for a Kotomi poster to show up one day and my wish came true, time to make some room on my walls ^.^

I probably won’t be posting anything else for a few days since I have a couple exams to study for this week. If you want to see what’s inside Megami Creators Vol. 13, I’ll probably post some pics on Friday night or Saturday.

I finally got my copy of Megami Magazine Volume 101 earlier this week. The packaging has “Do Not Bend” in big black letters so someone tried to bend it in half; I really hate people like that. One thing about Megami Magazine is that they have what look like fan-made manga inserted between some pages that only stick out halfway from the spine. So when the magazine was bent, all of the regular pages ended up getting these little folds where the manga pages ended. Fortunately the folds weren’t too deep so I was able to straighten out the poster pages. Well, that’s enough rambling about the postal service. I took pictures of all the posters this time, and here they are:

The first poster is of Kagami and Tsukasa from Lucky Star. Personally, I think this poster looks a little bit weird. I think maybe their hair colour is off.

On the other side of the Lucky Star poster is Haruka in a maid uniform ^.^ This one is definitely going up on my wall, no point trying to keep the magazine in good condition when it’s already damaged.

More Zero no Tsukaima in this issue. I wonder why Louise has a towel ready to cover herself when they’re changing behind the tarp.

A nice pic of Birdy from Tetsuwan Birdy Decode. I swear, steam and bath foam has something against us guys.

I’ve only read the first volume of Negima, so I can’t remember any of these girls’ names.

I haven’t seen Ikkitousen, but this poster would be very good advertising for it. Makes me consider taking a look at the anime.

Hidamari Sketch was too loli for me. I prefer girls to be a bit closer to my age or at least look like they’re in they’re teens.

I watched a couple of eps of Koihime Musou, but the plot didn’t really interest me so I dropped it.

Looks like some of the girls from Clannad are out for a festival. I wish they had a poster of Kotomi :(

There’s quite a few pages on new anime that will be coming out soon. I’m really looking forward to both Clannad After Story and Tora Dora this season. Both of these will actually begin airing this week in Japan. Clannad will air on Oct. 3, and Tora Dora will air on Oct. 1.

Like I said before, there’s these little manga pages inserted in the magazine. Here’s one of Zero no Tsukaima. I wish I knew what they were saying :/

The Lucky Star OVA came out a couple days ago. I’m still waiting for some subs before I watch it.

The Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni OVA (OAV) will be coming out on DVD on Dec. 26, and it’ll be out on Blu-ray on Jan. 23, 2009. I wish the release date was a little bit earlier, Higurashi was one of my favourite anime.

Some info on Penguin Musume and Hidamari Sketch. I would’ve liked it if they had some posters of Sakura Nankyoku, she’s so cool ^.^

At the back of the magazine is some info on adult games. I wonder if people in Japan have a problem with promoting adult material in a magazine that anyone can buy. I also noticed that all of the games were labelled with Win, PS2, PSP, or NDS. I guess the PS3 isn’t very popular even on its home turf.

On the back of the magazine is a lovely picture of Rika and Hanyu in some frilly dresses. I think Rika looks really cute with the cat ears and tail ^.^

There’s also a useful little table at the bottom with the release dates for the Higurashi OVA. It looks like I’ll have to wait until August of next year before the last episode is released :(

And of course, with every issue of Megami Magazine comes a large double-sided poster. This one had Yoko from Gurren Lagann on one side and the girls from Strike Witches on the other.
