A Taste of Animethon (ATOA) took place this here in Edmonton this weekend and I took this opportunity to try out some event photography. From the last Animethon, I learned that I needed a good flash and a wide-angle lens to better deal with the conditions at Grant MacEwan (the place where Animethon and ATOA is held). I have neither and I didn’t want to spend $500 on them so I borrowed some equipment instead. I used a Canon T2i with a 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens and 430EX flash. It was my first time using this set-up so it took a while to get used to and some pictures didn’t turn out as well as I wanted, but some of them still worked out. Anyone who is here just for cosplay pictures can scroll to the bottom.

Yesterday was the third and last day of the 18th annual Animethon, an anime convention held at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton, Canada. It used to be the largest anime convention west of Toronto, but since Anime Evolution in Vancouver claimed that title two years ago, it is now just the oldest annual convention in Canada. This year I went mainly to take pictures of cosplayers and the event in general, which you can find at the bottom of this post. I have everything I could want right now in terms of anime/manga merchandise, so there’s no loot to show off.

Animethon is an annual anime convention held in Edmonton, Alberta. It’s marketed as the longest-running anime convention in Canada and usually takes place in August. For those who can’t wait a whole 12 months between Animethons, there’s also a sort of mini-convention called A Taste of Animethon (ATOA). This is held halfway between Animethons and is a scaled-down 1 day version of the actual event. As regular attendees will know, Animethon always takes place at Grant MacEwan University (formerly College, formerly Community College), and this year it was held yesterday, February 12.

It’s that time of year again! Animethon 17 will be taking place from August 6 to 8, which is less than two weeks away. AT used to be the largest anime convention in Western Canada, but I guess it lost that title to Anime Evolution in Vancouver last year. That explains why the ad now says it’s the longest running anime convention in Canada instead. I actually find it surprising that AT even held both titles. Most people around here have never heard of anime, and a lot of those that have think it’s some kind of Japanese porn because of the government and media. Just to prove my point, when I took this picture at the train platform, the guy sitting next to me gave me a weird look, stood up, and sat down at a bench at the other end of the platform.

Anyways, while I did get a lot of goodies in Japan, one thing I didn’t get any of was manga. I can’t read Japanese so there was no point in my picking any up there. That’ll be the only thing I’m buying at AT this year.

I’m finally back from spending the weekend at the 16th annual Animethon here in Edmonton, Canada. It seeems like every year there’s more and more vendors in the vendor hall, which probably explains why this year was the most expensive for me. I spent over $300 this time and bought what you see below:

Animethon is an anime convention that takes place every year at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton, Canada. This year the convention took place from Aug. 8-10 and the theme was gothic and lolita. I only stayed for the second day and dropped by after work the day before. I know some people have been going to Animethon since it first started, but I’m relatively new since I only started going at Animethon 11. Below I have a pic of the front desk getting set up on Friday afternoon.
