Google Panda Has Shunned Me

April 05, 2011 By: Nopy Category: Announcements

Those of you who run your own blogs may have heard about something called the Google Panda. From what I gather, it’s a new algorithm designed to improve Google’s search results. It works by bringing down the ranks of low-quality sites so that when you search for something like “anime”, you don’t get results that take you to a page selling memberships to “Hentai Key” or some other porn site. So what does this have to do with me? Well, 2 weeks ago I noticed a rapid decline in the amount of traffic Nopy’s Blog was getting, right around the time Panda was being implemented. Yes, I was Panda Slapped.

At the time I didn’t know what was going on, just that not as many people were visiting, so I decided to publish a post. On March 24 I decided to go with one of the staples of my blog, a Megami Magazine post. That helped stall the decline in traffic as you can see from the chart below. Unfortunately, visits continued to drop shortly after that.

My History with Anime

February 22, 2011 By: Nopy Category: Announcements, Other Stuff, Personal

I would like to propose a project. If you are reading this, there is a 99% chance that you watch anime, and I know that many of you have your own blogs. Since we all enjoy the same thing, I thought it would be nice for everyone to share their history regarding when/how they discovered anime, how it has become a part of their lives, and how they think it has changed since then. It can be as detailed or as short as you want, and it can be about anything anime-related such as: your favourite series, why you watch anime, difficulties in getting anime, collecting anime goodies, anime conventions, cosplaying, and drawing.

If you have a blog, simply write about your history with anime and send me the link. I will add your link to the list below and a new project page I created with links to everyone participating. If you have a banner you would like displayed, send that in too. In return, I simply ask for you to spread the word and link back to this post. If you don’t have a blog and would like to participate, worry not. Simply email me with your screen name and history, and I will create a page for you. I will also add links to any profile pages you may have (ie: Twitter, Youtube, MyAnimeList, MyFigureCollection). I look forward to reading everyone’s posts.

Nopy’s History With Anime:

If you’re a regular visitor to my blog, you’ll know that I love anime, but what got me started with this addiction? Like many anime fans my age in North America, my first encounter with anime was the original Dragon Ball series which aired for a short while in the mid 90’s before being cancelled due to poor ratings. Shortly after, Sailor Moon hit the airwaves and took the cartoon world by storm. I remember seeing newspaper articles describing the Sailor Moon phenomenon and finding Sailor Moon merchandise in every asian and toy store in the city. I was also swept along with the Sailor Moon craze. That cartoon (I didn’t know what anime was at the time) had everything: pretty characters, neat powers (at least to a kid), plenty of action, a bit of controversy, and a good story. In fact, I liked Sailor Moon so much that I spent whatever loose change I could find on the ground on Sailor Moon stickers, cards, temporary tattoos, and posters (loose change bought you a lot back then).

Blog Post 200

September 14, 2010 By: Nopy Category: Announcements

So according to WordPress, this is my 200th post (yay). Unfortunately, I’m writing this post to let you guys know that I’m going to be cutting back on posts for a while. Some of you may recall that last month I was trying to decide what to do for my future. Well, I’ve decided and things are going to be busy for a while. Right now I’m attending school part-time and working part-time. I’ve also applied to write the GRE general test, which is required to get into graduate schools in America. As much as I hate to admit it, it looks like the U.S. has far more opportunities for me than Canada does. In the meantime, I’m looking for researchers who would be willing to take me in as an assistant, which would help in my applications to grad schools. With all of these things going on, my parents are also hinting that it might be time for me to leave the nest soon. Taking care of everything is going to be a lot of work so my posting might dwindle back down to one post per week depending on how busy I am.

In other non-personal related news, I recently saw this figure at AmiAmi:

A Surprise Package

September 02, 2010 By: Nopy Category: Announcements

When I get home at the end of the day I usually don’t expect much, just the dog sitting by the door wagging his tail and maybe a few bills in the mail. Today I was surprised to find a small package waiting for me. It’s normal to find a package with a figure or some magazines/artbooks I’ve ordered every once in a while, but I always know that they’re coming so it’s no surprise. This package was totally unexpected, I had just received everything I’d ordered recently and as far as I know, none of my figure preorders have been released yet. The packaging also wasn’t familiar to me, it didn’t match the way things were packaged from stores I regularly buy from. Well, after a long day, my brain wasn’t functioning at capacity so it took me a while to think of doing the first thing most people would do (before examining the box): check to see who the sender was.

2nd Anniversary and Other Stuff

August 08, 2010 By: Nopy Category: Announcements

Well, it looks like yesterday was my blog’s 2nd anniversary (yay).  I remember when I first started and only got around 3 views a day from one or two visitors, I never thought that this blog would grow this big or last this long. To everyone reading this, thank you for your support.

Now on to other stuff. I’ve pretty much been absent from the blogging world for the past week due to several reasons:

Reason 1:

I was learning how to draw anime bodies. I can draw faces decently, but I never got beyond that until now. I did manage to do a rough sketch of my prototype mascot below. The parts I had most trouble with were the elbows and knees. I still need to fix up her right arm since it looks a bit small. I think I’m going to stick with the clothes I picked for her, but I haven’t decided on what kind of footwear she should have.

Reason 2:

I was trying to plan my future. It’s my 23rd birthday today and as I get older I’m starting to worry about what I’m going to do for the rest of my life. I don’t know whether I should get a Masters degree or start working. If I get a Masters degree, I’ll need to decide which field of research I want to go into, and if I get a job, I need to decide what kind of job. I’ve also been thinking of when I should move out and when I do, whether I should stay in the same city, province, or country.

Reason 3:

This weekend was Animethon, so I spent yesterday and today there. It seems like the admission price has increased once again, which is really annoying since everything still feels the same. Some of the merchandise being sold in the vendors area was fake (ie: nendoroids, artbooks) so I just stuck to buying manga like I had originally planned.

Reason 4:

I think the stress from Reason 2 combined with lack of sleep is making me sick.

So if I haven’t visited your blog recently, now you  know why. Hopefully I’ll be able to get back into things soon.

My First Tablet + Digital Drawing

July 28, 2010 By: Nopy Category: Announcements, Personal

Last week I received a Wacom Bamboo Fun which I had ordered the week before. I’ve always wanted to learn how to make my own anime characters on the computer, and when I saw this on sale, I figured I’d buy it. The Bamboo Fun is the larger one of the Bamboo series and it includes the pen and touch functions. After trying it out, I’m glad  was only intereseted in the pen function. The touch function doesn’t seem to work when my fingers are too dry, and the multi-touch thingies only seem to work half of the time for me. On the other hand, the pen function does as it’s advertised. The only downside is that the nib at the tip of the pen seems to wear down pretty quick. The only way to fix it is to buy replacements from Wacom, which seems like a cheap money-making tactic to me. The Fun is also the largest of the Bamboo series, so there’s enough room for someone to actually draw something (as opposed to the smaller models). For an idea of its size, here’s how much space it takes up on my desk:

AT17 in 9 Days

July 28, 2010 By: Nopy Category: Anime, Announcements

It’s that time of year again! Animethon 17 will be taking place from August 6 to 8, which is less than two weeks away. AT used to be the largest anime convention in Western Canada, but I guess it lost that title to Anime Evolution in Vancouver last year. That explains why the ad now says it’s the longest running anime convention in Canada instead. I actually find it surprising that AT even held both titles. Most people around here have never heard of anime, and a lot of those that have think it’s some kind of Japanese porn because of the government and media. Just to prove my point, when I took this picture at the train platform, the guy sitting next to me gave me a weird look, stood up, and sat down at a bench at the other end of the platform.

Anyways, while I did get a lot of goodies in Japan, one thing I didn’t get any of was manga. I can’t read Japanese so there was no point in my picking any up there. That’ll be the only thing I’m buying at AT this year.

Back from Japan

June 28, 2010 By: Nopy Category: Announcements, Personal

It’s been a month, but I’m finally back home from Japan. The trip was awesome, but now it’s time to get out of vacation mode and get caught up with friends, family, work, and school. More posts to follow sometime this week.

Off to Japan

May 28, 2010 By: Nopy Category: Announcements

Some of you may (or may not) have noticed my disappearance from the blogosphere this past week. The reason for that was because I was busy finishing up plans for my trip to Japan. I’ll be leaving early tomorrow morning so this will probably be my last post for a while.

I’ll be visiting all the otaku hotspots including Akiba, Nakano Broadway, Den Den Town, and the Lucky Star shrine. If anyone can think of any more, let me know :) I don’t know if I’ll be able to write any new posts while I’m there so you guys might not see any updates until I get back at the end of June.

Anyways, once I get back, expect to see a lot of photos!

Contest Results

March 08, 2010 By: Nopy Category: Announcements

Well, its been a week since the figure giveaway contest ended, and like I promised, I have finally decided on a winner. Before I announce who won the contest though, I’d like to say that everyone that participated did a wonderful job. Back before the contest ended I could tell I was going to need a few days to decide on a winner, and I was glad that I gave myself a week to judge the entries since I needed the time to pick the best entry. You don’t have to take my word for it though, I’ve put all of the contest entries below.
