Spring 2014 Anime Round-up

June 04, 2014 By: Nopy Category: Anime

The summer hasn’t officially started, which means it’s still spring and there’s time to do another anime season round-up! Here I offer my thoughts on the anime airing this season and whether I’m watching them or not. I’ve left out sequels since it wouldn’t make sense to start a series in the middle of the story. Keep in mind that my opinions are from the point of view of a mid-20’s male who’s been watching anime since the mid 90’s so there are some biases.

For my regular readers who are wondering why this is so late, I have legitimate excuses: my program stuffed 16+ courses into 8 months so my final exams didn’t begin until everyone was done theirs; I had to attend a conference for a week after finals; I went to NYC for a week after the conference; I had to pack up and move back home for the summer, and I just settled back in to work. Enough about me though, let’s talk anime.

Abarenbou Rikishi Matsutarou

I thought this would be about a clumsy doofus that makes his way as a wrestler, but it’s actually about an “innocent” thief/terrorist/kidnapper/overall criminal. Sorry, but I just don’t see the appeal of such a character.

Recommendation: don’t watch

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Akuma no Riddle

Elimination games are always fun, but Akuma no Riddle doesn’t really feel like one. Sticking in rules like having to announce your intent to kill someone just takes the fun out of everything.

Recommendation: don’t watch unless you’re desperate for some killing

Nopy’s Status: watching

Baby Steps

A child prodigy finds something he’s not good at and learns to be good at it. There’s really not much to get you excited.

Recommendation: don’t watch unless you really like tennis

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Black Bullet

This anime has the typical elements that appeal to young male audiences: action, cool powers, and cute girls. The story’s a bit lacking in that it’s cliché and very predictable, but hey, at least one of the characters is voiced by Yui Horie.

Recommendation: good for younger guys

Nopy’s Status: watching

Blade and Soul

Initially I was excited to see an action anime about a lone female warrior wandering the world. It was very disappointing though, the story is very basic and it’s hard to feel any attachment to the characters.

Recommendation: don’t watch

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou

A story about some residents at an apartment complex sounds pretty dull, but I was pleasantly surprised to find this anime to be very likeable. The interactions between the characters are entertaining and the cast has some uncommon and amusing archetypes like a well-meaning masochist.

Recommendation: good for comedy lovers

Nopy’s Status: watching

Captain Earth

Normally I like my mecha anime to be a bit more serious. Libido engine? What? Actually, this seems just slightly less ridiculous than Star Driver, I don’t know why I’m not watching it.

Recommendation: good for “intellectual perverts”

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Disk Wars: Avengers

Let’s collect Marvel superheroes!

Recommendation: don’t watch

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Dragon Collection

Dragons are no better than Marvel superheroes.

Recommendation: don’t watch

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Escha and Logy no Atelier: Tasogare no Sora no Renkinjutsushi

Considering what happens in all of the Atelier games, I should’ve expected this to be very boring. I really wish the animation was nicer.

Recommendation: don’t watch unless you’re a rabid Atelier fan

Nopy’s Status: watching (barrel!)

Fuuun Ishin Dai Shogun

So you’re telling me the head honcho of a group of badasses can have anything he wants and he’s still a virgin? I don’t like dumb protagonists.

Recommendation: don’t watch

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka

I think I’m going to get a cavity from all the sweetness. Damn that head to body ratio!

Recommendation: moé galore

Nopy’s Status: watching

Gokukoku no Brynhildr

The plot sounded decent, but the execution in the first few episodes was horrible. Some of the conversations between the characters also completely disregard their situation (cake, anyone?)

Recommendation: don’t watch

Nopy’s Status: not watching

I’ve said this hundreds of times, but I simply don’t watch sports anime. With that said though, Haikyuu actually seems decent with a solid protagonist and steady character development.

Recommendation: good for volleyball fans

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Hero Bank

I fell asleep while watching this one.

Recommendation: good for insomniacs

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Hitsugi no Chaika

Interesting setting, somewhat likeable characters, but a dull story makes Hitsugi no Chaika an average anime. Chaika’s way of speaking is also starting to get really annoying.

Recommendation: not worth it if you’re short on time

Nopy’s Status: watching

Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san

One girl likes cats and one girl likes dogs. I really don’t see where this anime is going.

Recommendation: don’t watch

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Isshuukan Friends

I was thinking that this would be something like Chihiro’s arc in ef – a tale of memories, but it’s actually the opposite: a cute story about a girl learning to make friends. The story so far is somehow very captivating with steady progression and character development.

Recommendation: must watch

Nopy’s Status: watching

Kamigami no Asobi

I’m sure if I were a girl I’d be drooling over all the hot guys.

Recommendation: good for girls who want to fantasize about their harem

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Kanojo ga Flag o Oraretara

I wonder how hard it is nowadays to come up with a unique way to “win” girls.

Recommendation: good for boys who want to fantasize about their harem

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Kantoku Fuyuki Todoki

I think this is supposed to be funny, but I just don’t understand the point of the baby.

Recommendation: don’t watch

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Kenzen Robo Daimidaler

The best place to put a cannon on a giant robot is obviously between the legs. Also, anything sticking out of the front of someone’s pants is their tail.

Recommendation: good for perverts

Nopy’s Status: not watching

I’d probably watch this if I was 4.

Recommendation: for kids

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Kin’iro no Chord: Blue Sky

Typical reverse harem setup. Sorry, but I’m a guy.

Recommendation: for girls

Nopy’s Status: not watching

M3 – Sono Kuroki Hagane

Initially I thought that M3 looked pretty cool, but at the end of the first episode I realize it was just going to be one of those feel-good ‘I did the right thing’ shows. Personally I’m a bit tired of the same old formula.

Recommendation: decent show for someone newer to anime

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Mahou Shoujo Taisen

Who doesn’t love anime with “mahout shoujo” in the title? The name got me rather hyped up, but then I was disappointed with some ridiculous girl chasing a critter around town.

Recommendation: don’t watch

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei

The girls tell me that Tatsuya is a hunk of an anime man. He looks like a regular character to me. His sister, Miyuki, on the other hand is a character that I can get excited about. Otherwise the show seems like a typical teens-save-the-world-while-living-a-school-life show.

Recommendation: decent anime

Nopy’s Status: watching

Majin Bone

If I were still 10 years old I’d probably be all over this show, it seems to have a good balance of talking and action. Now if only the story was more unique…

Recommendation: good for kids

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to

Apparently being a manga artist has some perks, like getting your assistants to help you “visualize” some of your scenes. I’m not too interested in someone else’s fantasies though.

Recommendation: don’t watch

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Mekaku City Actors

I’m 8 episodes into this anime and I still have no clue what it’s about. It’s by SHAFT though, so something good has to happen, right?

Recommendation: I don’t know…

Nopy’s Status: watching

Monster Retsuden Oreca Battle

You can tell from the title what happens in this anime and it’s no Pokemon

Recommendation: don’t watch

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Nandaka Velonica

Aliens don’t normally bother me, but when they look and act like Velonica it’s just terrifying.

Recommendation: good for alternative horror enthusiasts

Nopy’s Status: not watching

No Game No Life

NGNL is my guilty pleasure of the season. I could talk about the unusually colourful animation, hiki characters that aren’t useless, refreshing comedy, game references, or even how a lot of the things mentioned relate to my studies on strategy and game theory. But really, I like this show because Steph is cute and Jibril is hot.

Recommendation: must watch for most guys

Nopy’s Status: watching

Ping Pong The Animation

My first reaction to Ping Pong was that this was one fugly anime. Upon closer examination, the story seems to be pretty decent. Like I’ve said before though, I’m not a big fan of sports anime.

Recommendation: not bad for Ping Pong fans

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin

There are two reasons to watch this show: Tensai and Nanana. While Juugo has more of a spine than most protagonists, I feel like he’s missing a bit of humour that would’ve made him perfect.

Recommendation: not a must-see, but I’d say it’s still good

Nopy’s Status: watching

Seikoku no Dragonar

I’ve seen so many pet girls appear in a boy’s life that it just doesn’t appeal to me anymore unless there’s something totally new in it. There’s nothing that hasn’t been done before here.

Recommendation: don’t watch unless you’re fine with a mish-mash of old anime

Nopy’s Status: not watching

Selector Infected Wixoss

Oh great, another card game anime intended to make money off of card sales. With that said though, the cards are mostly cute girls, so…

Recommendation: for card fetishists

Nopy’s Status: watching

Sidonia no Kishi

The space scenes are great, but I absolutely hate how characters look when they’re done with cg. It’s such a shame that a good story like Sidonia got paired with this type of animation. The setting it pretty cool and there seems to be a lot of tension developing between the characters.

Recommendation: good for sci-fi fans

Nopy’s Status: watching

Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii

I wasn’t expecting much from this series, but Nike is exactly how a heroine should be: witty and rough around the edges, but still caring and intelligent. Livi also has some good character background and development. After Isshuukan Friends, this anime is the most character-centric.

Recommendation: sweet anime with some tense moments

Nopy’s Status: watching

Like Velonica, this is one terrifying anime. Imagine if your granny had a TV screen as a face, but her skin was still all old and wrinkly. I’d probably shoot the thing before it could get close.

Recommendation: for kids and horror lovers

Nopy’s Status: not watching

In summary, this is an average anime season, though with a ton of series. If you only have time to watch one anime, I highly recommend Isshuukan Friends. There might not be any action but the characters are so loveable and it’s always nice to see how the bonds between them grow stronger every episode. Some close runner-ups include No Game No Life, Sidonia no Kishi, Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou, and Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii. To see my other round-up posts, click here.

  1. Wait, you still blog? IMPOSSIBLE!!!!

Yeah, I took the season off to defeat my anime backlog. Seems like that was a good thing, since many have called it a thoroughly mediocre season, with a few standouts, like Isshuukan Friends, and the sequels (Jojo and Mushishi). But I’ll probably poke at a few when I’m done with my backlog.

Anyways, you bastard! You were in my city (NYC) and didn’t let me know??? *shakes fist*
Justin recently posted..Hyperdimension Neptunia PP Review

    • Hey now, I did say that the announcement about calling it quits was an April Fools joke :P

And you live in NYC!? I had no idea! If I go again sometime we definitely need to meet up.

  2. Good to have you back :)

My Mekaku recommendation: only for the die-hard fans of the original music videos. All movies based on songs and MVs are cr*p, why would anime be any different? And for Shaft-fags. Everyone else: stay FAR away :D

Isshukan, Kawaisou, NGNL, Mahouka and Black Bullet are my top choices that I can watch every week, the rest is average or below that.
JoJo I want to marathon once it’s over ^_^

    • I’m admittedly a Shaft-fag, just love them head tilts :)

I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about Jojo so I’m tempted to marathon it as well.

      • I tend to like their style as well but I do not necessarily enjoy everything they make just because of their visuals :)

  3. Oh you are really busy all around, nice to see you roundup.

I can barely sit still seeing you badmouthing Gokukoku no Brynhildr, though XD

I watch only a small amount of shows this season, like Black Bullet, Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka, Isshuukan Friends, M3 – Sono Kuroki Hagane and some more.

hi ero particles, libido engine, just what happened to mecha anime.
Since I´m a pervert I´m watching both, but Damididaler is just embarrasing, it would be much better as crazy comedy witthout silly boob and penis jokes.

Blade and Soul is like a trainwreck, I can’t look away. Seriously, the writing is so bad and the plain main heroine is just a bad joke. I feel bad that Gonzo made this horrible work, but you know I love the Ending song.

  4. I’ve been so busy lately that I didn’t have much time to even watch the first episodes of most anime that came out this season. That said, even though you disliked Kanojo ga Flag and Mahou Shojo Taisen, I’m finding them enjoyable enough.

Kanojo ga Flag gets surprisingly complex in later episodes, though it still has some dumb harem shenanigans so you’d probably get bored of that. Mahou Shojo Taisen is pretty much just my guilty pleasure, since it’s a quick watch and is entertaining enough for me.

Overall though, this season is really mediocre.

    • Mahou Shoujo Taisen seems to be a mish-mash of random ideas, though I have to admit that the character designs are nice.
