With the world having avoided another apocalypse, it is time again to reflect on some of the best anime of the past year. While most people do a list of their favourite anime series, many of you already know that I do something different: the top 10 anime girls of the year. My criteria for selecting the top 10 anime girls is based on looks, personality, and overall likability. Any anime girl who appeared in a series that aired this year qualifies, but in order to keep the list fresh from year to year, I tend not to include girls from sequels or long-running series.
Without further ado, here are my top 10 anime girls of 2012:
10. Shizuku Mizutani (Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun)
The heroine of Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun seems boring and dull at first. She’s not the hottest girl in class and doesn’t really have any talents. The reason I like her and why she’s number 10 on the list is that she’s so down-to-Earth that it’s hilarious. Sometimes reason and logic don’t always lead to the best answer and Shizuku is a perfect example of this.
9. Eucliwood Hellscythe (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? of the Dead)
Eu is arguably the cutest girl in Kore wa Zombie Desu ka, but she doesn’t say very much. That doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have an interesting voice though. Thanks to Ayumu’s imagination, Eu actually contains the voices of dozens of popular voice actresses, which is a real treat. She’s also a very powerful necromancer, which is cool.
8. Kuroyukihime (Accel World)
Smart, athletic, beautiful, and popular, Kuroyukihime is the envy of every teenage girl (and probably the desire of every guy too). She’s a near-perfect yamato nadeshiko, with her only real downside being that she has poor taste in men. Being “perfect” isn’t enough to make it to the top of my list though or else there would be a ton of girls tied for the top spot, which is why she’s at number 8.
7. Oda Nobunaga (Sengoku Collection)
A lesser-known character that made her debut this year was the Little Devil Girl, Oda Nobunaga. Due to the sheer number of characters in Sengoku Collection, I’m pretty sure she got less screen time than a supporting character in a regular anime would, but I smiled most of the time she was on-screen. Her haughty personality mixed with her ignorance of the modern world made for some amusing moments.
6. Akiko Himenokouji (Onii-chan Dakedo Ai Sae Areba Kankeinai yo ne)
When I saw Akiko for the first time, I thought “aw, she looks so cute,” but then the series revealed that she’s actually an affection-crazed brother-loving incestuous maniac. I absolutely love her creepy “guhehe” laugh. While she’s usually portrayed like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, she does have a cute and sensible side as well, just not around her brother.
5. Nyaruko (Haiyore! Nyaruko-san)
Nyarlathotep (or Nyaruko), the creeping chaos is supposed to have some forms so scary looking that you could die from terror, but she can also take on the form of an energetic young girl. She’s also an otaku and adds a ton of craziness to what would be an otherwise boring series.
4. Kanna Tanigawa (Ano Natsu de Matteru)
I admit that there’s really nothing “special” about Kanna, she’s an average high school girl with zero tolerance for alcohol. The reason why she’s so high up on my list is because she almost made me cry. I’m a sucker for romantic stories that actually make you feel something, and Kanna’s story was so sad that I felt it deserved a spot. Oh, and she also dresses like a catgirl.
3. Asuna Yuuki (Sword Art Online)
Hot and cool at the same time, Asuna is probably one of the most talked-about characters of the year. She’s a strong swordsman and is able to take the lead when a situation arises. Asuna is also apparently the best cook in SAO and a loving mother. She would’ve been the ideal character for the number 1 spot if it weren’t for the fact that she turned into a useless damsel-in-distress.
2. that girl (Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita)
Few characters make it onto my list without what most would consider an “attractive” character design, and none have made it to second place before. That girl from Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita (no one knows her name) made it this far all thanks to her personality and witty monologues. She may appear like an innocent young woman trying to do her job, but deep down inside she doesn’t care one bit about anyone but herself and manipulates others to get what she wants. That doesn’t mean she’s a power-hungry dictator (though she did become queen of a civilization), in fact, she’s rather apathetic to most things. Her way of thinking makes her a very interesting character to listen to.
1. Ririchiyo Shirakiin (Inu x Boku SS)
Ririchiyo made it to the top of my list thanks to her style, personality, and the humour that she invokes. I don’t think any other character can match her in style. She wears something different nearly every episode and looks fantastic in all of her outfits. they range from her school uniform, to casual clothes, to her oversized white shirt with a lab coat overtop. Her personality is so unique, that a new term was coined in order to describe her: tsunshun, someone who gets depressed after acting cold to another person. The last thing I loved about Ririchiyo was her seemingly random revelations that always made me laugh, like the one below.
That wraps up my list for this year. For more awesome anime girls, check out my lists from 2010 and 2011. I know there are a lot more awesome girls that I didn’t mention, so feel free to comment on your favourite girls from 2012 below.
