Spring 2012 Anime Round-up

May 03, 2012 By: Nopy Category: Anime

Now that all of the new anime for the spring season have aired, it’s time for my seasonal round-up of the best and worst. To those of you new to my seasonal posts, I preview every new anime (excluding some sequels and spin-offs) and share my thoughts on them. I also indicate which series I thought were worth continuing and which weren’t. At the end I pick three anime – the best of the season, the worst of the season, and the most under-rated. Naturally, my opinions are all heavily biased.

Accel World

I would’ve watched this series for Kuroyukihime alone. She’s pretty and looks cool in her black dress and butterfly wings. The world that the anime is set in has me interested too, who wouldn’t want to be able to connect to the internet using their brain? The story follows a typical shounen plot, but that’s OK.

Status: watching

Acchi Kocchi

Far too slow for my tastes.

Status: not watching

Visually, AKB0048 reminded me of Houkago no Pleiades. Story-wise, it looks like another “growing up” series.

Status: not watching

Arashi no Yoru ni

Is this even an anime? It looks like something I would find on TV here, except it’s in Japanese.

Status: not watching

Folktales from Japan

Not my cup of tea, but it would be nice to show a 3 or 4-year old.

Status: not watching

The animation style was terrible. At least I learned what that bump on your wrist is called (and subsequently forgot). That was about all I gained from this series.

Status: not watching

Ginga e Kickoff!!

I have to admit, the girl with the Osakan accent was cute and the story seems solid. I’m not much of a soccer fan though so I’ll pass.

Status: not watching

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san

Admit it, Nyaruko is awesome. The craziness level in this series isn’t as high as Excel Saga or FLCL, but it’s on par with Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan. There’s yuri and a bunch of references to older anime too, which is always a bonus.

Status: watching

Hiiro no Kakera

I feel a reverse harem developing here. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the same romantic feel as a series like Fruits Basket or the laughter-inducing comedy of Ouran High School Host Club.

Status: not watching

I was hoping that Hyouka would be something along the lines of Kyoani’s Key anime adaptations, but I got a snotty guy with a hair fetish. I like girls with long hair too, but using it like a spider web is just weird.

Status: not watching

The character designs aren’t to my tastes, but I do like the military aspect of this series. Depending on where the story goes, I may continue watching it.

Status: watching (for now)

Kuroko no Basuke

Lets be realistic here, can you really not notice someone on a basketball court when there’s only 10 people on at a time? At least put some effort into real basketball techniques.

Status: not watching

Kuromajo-san ga Toru!!

This is a show for kids.

Status: not watching

Medaka Box

What I gained from the first episode was that this anime is about a dominatrix and her man-servant(s). It tries to be funny by having the main male character end up in some sticky situations, but I wasn’t laughing.

Status: not watching

Natsuiro Kiseki

I think it’s safe to say that most people (myself included) are out of the 4-5 moe anime girls phase. I didn’t think there was anything wrong with Natsuiro Kiseki, I’m just tired of seeing the same old thing for the past several years.

Status: not watching

Nazo no Kanojo X

Let me get this straight, a guy sees a girl’s drool and decides to taste it, then becomes dependant on it to stay healthy. That makes total sense. I can’t say I’m surprised though, Japan is the land of odd fetishes and a drool fetish is certainly odd.

Status: not watching

Polar Bear Cafe

I guess you could call this anime, but again, it’s something I can find on TV here.

Status: not watching

My first thought when I saw this anime was “wow, this is so retro – 80’s style.” Later I found out it actually is an 80’s anime that just never got animated until now. I’m sure Ozma would’ve made a decent series back in the day, but its time has long since passed.

Status: not watching

Saint Seiya Omega

Another throwback to an era long gone, Saint Seiya Omega attempts to bring back the glory days of the franchise. I doubt many fans of the original series still watch anime, and with nothing to grab the attention of new fans, it falls short of being a good anime.

Status: not watching

Sakamichi no Apollon

I got some strong yaoi vibes from this series, which really put me off. Read this post.

There aren’t many people who don’t like zombies, but again, only from Japan will you find a character with a zombie fetish. At least the zombie here looks pretty. The series got off to a really slow start, so I’m hoping things will pick up soon, otherwise I’ll drop it.

Status: watching (for now)

Sengoku Collection

I’ve always been averse to anime changing famous heroes into cute girls (ie: Sengoku Otome, Samurai Girls), but oddly, I’m enjoying this series. Perhaps it’s because I like the character designs, or maybe because the fanservice isn’t in-your-face blatant, or because each episode is a standalone story. Each episode you get to enjoy some eye candy, listen to a story, and then move on.

Status: watching

Shiba Inuko-san

A show about a girl that looks like a dog… um no, I’m not a furry.

Status: not watching

Shining Hearts: Shiawase no Pan

It’s an anime about bread. Then again, I like Tony Taka’s character designs and that’s enough to get me through 12 episodes.

Status: watching

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia

Did they really have to show the same thing twice? it seems like a waste of time to me. Tasogare Otome x Amnesia is about as average as you can get – average animation, average story, average characters – there’s really nothing I found to be good about it, but there’s nothing I found bad.

Status: not watching

Although the characters are in high school, Tsuritama felt more like an anime for kids about friendship and facing your fears (in this case, public speaking). It’s nice for younger audiences, but not for someone in their 20’s.

Status: not watching

Uchuu Kyoudai

This anime really struck a chord with me. I was one of those kids in the 90’s that believed that I could become an astronaut and that an international manned mission to Mars would be ready for me by the 2020’s. Well, I lost my perfect vision when I hit puberty so that automatically disqualifies me from the space program, Canada’s next call for astronaut applicants probably won’t be for another 10 years, and realistically, no one is going to be walking on Mars until the 2040’s or 2050’s. Although my dreams have been dashed by reality, it’s nice to remember them and what might’ve been, and this anime helps me do that.

Status: watching

An anime for anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like if guns were cute girls. I thought Akikan was the last we would see of this type of series.

Status: not watching

Yurumates 3D

This anime was so uninspiring that I actually forgot that I had already seen the first episode.

Status: not watching

American superheroes and American-like superheroes seem to be developing a foothold in the anime world with Marvel’s adaptations and series like Heroman. Zetman is the latest addition to the superhero line-up. I watch anime because it’s different from western cartoons, I see no point in watching Zetman when I can just turn on the TV and watch something nearly identical to it.

Status: not watching

This season’s lineup of series is really lacklustre. While I did find some new series to watch, I don’t think of any of them as high priority, though I would rate Accel World and Haiyore! Nyaruko-san close. With 7 new series added to my watch list and 3 continuations (Fate/Zero, Kore wa Zombie Desu ka, and Mouretsu Pirates), that brings the number of series I’m currently following to 10 (possibly 8 if I drop the two borderline series). That’s a good number for this season since I’ll be busier than usual.

You guys should be used to this by now, here are the awards as chosen by myself for this season.

Worst Series Award:

Yurumates 3D

Honestly, it takes skill for an anime to make me forget what it was about after watching it twice. As of this writing, I still can’t remember what happened in it.

Most Underrated Series Award:

Sengoku Collection

Why isn’t anyone blogging about this? Oda Nobunaga as a cute little devil girl is awesome.

Best Series Award:

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san

It might not be great, but it still trumps everything else this season. It has cute girls, humour, parody, yuri, aliens, lasers, a milf, and a trap. What more could you ask for?

  1. WHHHAAA???!

    Accel World: Good
Ginga E Kickoff: I only know of four bloggers watching Ginga. Two of them are blogging about it :D
Nyaruko-San: There are too many god**** references in this show. Thankfully we have a wiki for this
Kuroko’s Basketball: Of course you never notice the Point Guard, the floor general, especially in high school :P
Natsuiro, Polar Bear Cafe, Mysterious Girlfriend X: Hey, these are pretty popular shows around the blogosphere. I gave Natsuiro three episodes before putting it on hold, Polar Bear on hold after one, and dropping MGX because of the drool. It was a fine episode, but the drool will prevent me from ever enjoying it.
Tsuritama and Sakamichi No Apollon: I can’t believe you’re dropping both NoitaminA shows. For both you better at least give them a second ep, because that’s where it they were both great for me, I thought their first eps were ok. And there’s no yaoi in Apollon.
Sengoku Collection, Shiawase No Pan: The worst animes I have seen this season, with Sengoku at the bottom (there is definitely a reason why no one’s blogging it). Nopy, do not be fooled by ancient reworked history and Tony Taka! You must be saved! :D
Zetman: My most disappointing show this season. I had high hopes, but in trying to cram a volume of a seinen series into one episode and changing the story to fit the 13 ep limit, it has effectively rushed everything, and makes it kind of mediocre.

Overall, I’m a bit surprised you didn’t find a lot of shows this season, but correct me if I’m wrong, did you watch one ep of each? If you did, I wouldn’t totally recommend it for this season at least, but if you’re going to be busy, then that’s fine then.

    • I’m not surprised that you’re surprised, my round-up posts tend to be really subjective while my reviews are more objective. I watched anywhere from 1-3 episodes for each series, but the majority just got one chance because there are too many series to keep up with.

Historically, I have not enjoyed NoitaminA shows, with the exception of Ano Hana, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I’m not going to be keeping up with Tsuritama or Sakamichi no Apollon.

  2. Hey, I’m blogging Sengoku Collection! There are definitely a few episodes so far that aren’t so great, but I’m enjoying it for what it is.
Ari recently posted..Sengoku Collection Episode 4

    • Ah, great, now the series isn’t completely devoid of blogging coverage. I haven’t been able to make my rounds of the blogosphere in the past few months so a lot of blogs ended up slipping under my radar.

  3. NOOO! You must watch Kids on the Slope! You must! :P

  4. IT”S NOT YAOI WATCH THE FRACKIN SECOND EPISODE OF KIDS ON THE SLOPE NOW! the show has a pedigree the likes of which I have never seen.

the new kid falls in love with the long haired girl and the holagin falls in love with this blond haired girl.

    • That does change things up a bit, but I’d still like to know where exactly this show is going, it seems like another slice-of-life.

  5. No Saki Side A? Did you watch the first series?

  6. I have to jump on board and recommend that you give Sakamichi no Apollon more of a chance. At least up to the next episode, and if you don’t like it any more by then, then maybe it just isn’t your taste. It’s one that everybody’s praising, but that doesn’t mean you have to like it too ;) Oh, and there really isn’t any yaoi in it.

I’d also recommend giving Hyouka more of a chance but that could just be the biased KyoAni fan in me talking =P

I think I’m the only blogger who’s watching Arashi no Yoru ni. I’m actually watching it raw to help me with my Japanese learning XD Surprisingly it’s broadcast in dual audio, so it has an English language track too. Watching it in English makes it really seem like something you’d see on Western TV for little kids.

    • Well, if so many people are insisting that I give Sakamichi no Apollon a second chance, I guess I have no choice. The first episode just didn’t impress me.

I wasn’t aware that Arashi no Yoru ni had an English track, I wonder if they’ll broadcast it here too.

  7. Funny that you mentioned the one about bread, I’ve just got back in the states from Iraq and well the only thing that kept me from going insane was Prince of Tennis and Yakitate Japan!

I’m just happy to be back =)
Tuan recently posted..Getting back into the swing of things

    • Wow, it must be an interesting experience to be in a country that’s in the process of major reforms. This bread show is nothing like Yakitate Japan though.

Speak for yourself I still enjoy harems and loli groups just more characters to throw into the pile. I agree with you about Accel World, Shining Hearts, and Sengoku Group. However, I disagree with you about Medaka Box, Saint Seiya Omega, and Upotte. I like the character designs of Medaka Box and Upotte while I grew up watching the original St. Seiya and I am thrilled to see a new series. It may not capture the spirit of the original, but it’s nice for my nostalgia. Frankly the only series that was made this year that I have enjoyed is Highschool DXD. To be honest, I am looking forward to the summer movies more I am stupidly hyped for the Lyrical Nanoha A’s movie and the Madoka movie trilogy. But different strokes for different folks I guess.

    • Don’t get me wrong, I still love harem anime, but shows like Hanasaku Iroha and K-ON just don’t entertain me as much as they used to.

I’m also eagerly anticipating the 2nd Nanoha movie. If the first one is any indication, the 2nd should be awesome since it’s going to be based on the A’s series. I forgot about the Madoka trilogy, but I really want to see that too. When I was refering to “4-5 moe anime girls” anime, I wasn’t talking about these types of series, but the slice-of-life ones.

  9. Nice to see there’s another Sengoku Collection fan out there. However, I can really understand the lack of attention the show is getting. I think most people can agree that Oda Nobunaga is the best girl in the show (dat voice), but she basically only appeared in the first episode. For 26 episodes, I’m certain we’ll be seeing more of her later, but it’s kind of demoralizing not seeing much of her yet.

    • It’s disappointing that she’s not in the anime more. She didn’t even make an appearance in this last episode. I think Ieyasu is cute too, but I hope Nobunaga gets more screen time soon.

  10. Key.Fan says:

Aww, Nopy, no I’m really disappointed by you. How could you name K-On! and Hanasaku Iroha as the same?! (I like both, to be honest though)
I found Hanasaku to be way more “beautyful” and well… nice, while K-On! was more of a moe-Comedy to me. Hanasaku has so much more potential though. Chihayafuru is somewhere closer than K-On! imo.

Other thant that most of what you wrote her seems fine with me. Maybe with the exeption of Saka, but you’ve been told that already ;D

    • With free time being a problem, it’s time to get tough on anime.

Really, I thought Hanasaku Iroha was beautiful too, but like I said in my review of it, there was just far too much filler for my liking.

Even you’re recommending Sakamichi no Apollon? I guess I really have to give it a second chance now.

  11. so many animes marked with “not watching” :(
judging an anime by its first episode is a bit strict for me.

Since I wanted to reduce the anime consume in this season, I avoid the shows which description wasn’t that interesting for me from the start. When I start watching a show there is always risk that I end up following it till the end even though the first impression is medicore ^^

I like watching Tasogare Otome x Amnesia, Sankarea, Haiyore! Nyaruko-san and Nazo no Kanojo X I really like the unusual setting and the magic drool.
Wieselhead recently posted..Naoe Kanetsugu – Hyakka Ryoran by ALTER

    • I usually give anime a chance to woo me with it’s plot summary and first episode. If I have time or if I’m undecided on one, I go into the second episode as well. I had to limit most series to 1 episode this time since I don’t have much time to watch anime nowadays and I made my decisions based on that.

I’ll be looking forward to your reviews of the series that I’m not following. Reading reviews of bloggers I know is usually my way of judging how good I was at picking out the shows that I would enjoy.

  12. Wow you surely have been watching a lot for this season more so than me, but i then i saw you trimmed down ^^

So far well the only series Im watching and really enjoying as followed and ranked:

    1. Kids on Slope
    2. Space Brothers
    3. fate/zero (would put 1 but give a chance for new series)
    4. Sankarea
    5. Hyouka (might be 4 or more but it just started)
fabrice recently posted..Holo au Chateau de la Bretesche

    • I didn’t include Fate/Zero since it’s a continuation, but I’m really enjoying it as well. If I were to rank everything I’m currently following, it would be first.

  13. Sakamichi is going to develop into a love hexagon or something along those lines (So said my sources)

Kuuki recently posted..Why I loved Gokujo

  14. Man, I think this is the season with the most disagreements between your opinion and the shows I chose to watch, that’s fine though. Contrary to popular belief on the internet, people do have different tastes.

I wont go point for point but I will say that Sankarea, Zombie of the Dead, Nyaruko-san and Dusk Maiden of Amnesia are the shows I look forward to the most each week.

Although, I’m having such a hard time keeping up this season with anime. Too much Tera with the fellow bloggers. Interestingly enough I end up watching several episodes on one go rather than one at a time. I think I like it more that way.
Miette-chan recently posted..Let us commence with an All-Out Attack! Alter’s Aegis – ART WORKS ver.

    • I think the makeup of this season’s series is what has me disagreeing with most people. When it comes to moe, ecchi, mecha, and psychological thrillers, I think most people can agree on what’s good and not. This season seems to comprise mainly of different fetishes, a lot of throwback to the 80’s, and a return to kawaii.

  15. So many bloggers are not liking Acchi Kocchi because its slow. I like it exactly because it is slow ^_^ I guess since I do like it I have the responsibility to be the blogger that writes a full review on it when the season ends.
