Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai’s Malformed and Disfigured Cast

November 26, 2011 By: Nopy Category: Anime

The images speak for themselves.

While I am thoroughly enjoying the comedy found in Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, I am very disappointed at the level of animation quality shown in the 8th episode. The above images were taken from the first half of the episode and already showcase everything from misplaced eyes, to blocky hands, wooden arms, squished heads, and the “where am I looking?” stare. Anime International Company (AIC) has plenty of experience producing anime, going back to the late 80’s, so I’d expect them to have a certain level of quality. Unfortunately, it seems that their newest division, AIC Build, is not keeping up with the rest of the company’s animation staff.

The AIC Build division has only worked with one other anime before: Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Nake ga Nai. I suspect the division is simply inexperienced at animating episodes consistently with a tight schedule, but I don’t claim to know the inner workings of the company. My hope is that whatever happened here gets corrected soon. Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai is a profoundly hilarious anime (every episode so far has made me laugh), and I would hate to see it ruined with bad animation.

EDIT: By request, I have marked up the images above with what I thought was wrong with them. You can see the marked-up images below, just click to enlarge.

  1. Oh yes, there are only three possibilities. One is that they don’t have enough budget, or time or are trying to promote BD sales…:P

  2. Heh, I didn’t even realize it. Maybe I’m too focused see Sena and Kobato >.<

  3. Funny, it’s been a while since anyone brought up something like this. Back when I first started watching anime consistently it was a common topic. Nowadays I rarely hear or notice, I wonder if it’s because I got used to it or quality has improved over all.

    • Several years back, I think the main problem was that people were upset with the moe blob style rather than actual quality. Now that the moe boom has subsided, it seems those types of comments are disappearing as well.

  4. Sadly, I have yet to laugh at all during this series…I don’t really like it much.

WAIT. I laughed once. When the shark showed up in the eroge. That was priceless.

  5. I guess I didn’t notice until you pointed it out. This one has me laughing every time and it’s probably the biggest laugh-fest anime this season for me. I do see what you mean from the screenshots, but my eyes have gotten used to these sort of things happening so that I didn’t really realize it when watching. It does make me wonder though, just what causes quality drops. Rarely do we get a glimpse of how an anime is created, or the workings of the companies behind the scenes.

    • I really like the art style in this anime, which is why I was upset with the quality drop; usually I just shrug off stuff like this. It would be interesting if someone did a documentary on how anime is created nowadays.

  6. Would you mind editing the pictures with paint to show what you mean? I don’t really see anything that would even make me think “why is this”^^ I think the art is pretty well xD

  7. this time it was really noticeable, that the animation quality was lowered in quite a few scenes. Normally Im not someone who notice such things ^^

    • Sometimes gradual changes are less noticeable, but the quality in this episode was a huge drop compared to previous ones, which made it much easier to spot.

  8. I was too engrossed in the comedy to notice all that, but now that you’ve mentioned it – gosh it’s terrible. I’m not asking for perfection but at least some decent animation.

  9. The animation is really terrible. I just notice it in this episode.
I’m not sure about the other episode. Lets hope it will be as usual again in the next episode.

Owh I’ve never seen a this plugin before on a blog. How do you do the Anonymous recently posted (Blog post on the commentor site). I find that really cool :)

    • I’m also hoping the next episode will be better animated.

The plugin is called commentluv, I find it a good way to let my readers gain some more exposure.

  10. Every now and then there’s one episode that has less detail in many anime. I’m guessing the run out of budget to pay the good animators so they get the interns to do it or something. It doesn’t bother me that much, unless it’s some glaring fault, like switching Kobato’s eyes! WTH?

  11. I’m not following this series. But when I read your post, it reminded me of the complaints that I have with Penguindrum and some past anime that I watched. At some point, there’s always that dis-figuration and obvious laziness on the artwork… I think these malformations are simply unavoidable.

Btw, the art of this show reminds me of Denpa Onna.

    • It’s true that some mistakes show up in every anime, but the number here was just too much to have been one or two people’s mistake.

Both Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai and Denpa Onna had their characters designed by Buriki, which is why they looks similar.

  12. Wow. I am clueless about animation. You must have a pretty keen eye. It is interesting to see these flaws.

  13. LOL I wouldn’t notice those flaws on a conscious level that’s for sure, I’ve been interested in this series ever since I saw the nendoroid (funny how I find the figure first and the series AFTER). BUT I was planning on reading the manga, and if I enjoyed that then I might watch the anime.

    • What a coincidence, I actually saw the nendoroid first too, then I started looking up pictures and found out that an anime was coming out. Not sure I’ll pick up the manga though.

  14. I’m not following this particular series, so I didn’t have more stuff to reference to and my initial reaction before seeing your annotations was that some of the eyes could have been deliberate (exaggeration for expressions), whereas other areas could really have been hastily and lazily done. But under normal circumstances unless I paid deliberate attention or I have particular interest in some particular areas, I wouldn’t have noticed or care about them as a casual viewer. But that’s just me.

Though sometimes I must admit I have lowered the bar for animation these days that I simply let them go as I lack time to analyse things unfortunately. But then there are some really bad cases. Just look at this particular image for Gundam AGE that some Internet community had posted:

But then is it just me or that these things seem more apparent than the past decades? Or is it just the availability of the Internet makes it seem so?

    • I admit, had the animation not been as attractive as it is, I probably wouldn’t have noticed a quality drop. I really like the character designs in this series, which is why I couldn’t stand looking at all the mistakes in this episode.

That Gundam AGE image is hilarious, I love the grandpa standing on the other guy’s foot.

I think it’s just that the internet has made it more obvious. I watch some old anime episodes every once in a while and I see tons of quality issues.

  15. Whaaa you really have a keen eye, I didn’t notice any of this!

((excuse me for asking this really annoying, but where do you watch anime in such good quality? I mean, whoah))

    • It’s really noticeable if you pay attention.

Put the capital of Japan and the Japanese word for “library” together and do a search, you’ll see.

  16. i cant say i notice these types of mistakes in animation.. unless the character has the eyes of a crossed-eye possum in a scenario or situation that doesnt permit it, like delivering an epitaph for a funeral.

hmm i dunno, maybe they recycle the eyes over and over again, thats why sometimes the eyes dont look right because of resizing and adjustments.
alucard13mm recently posted..Onegai Twins! Karen Onodera dakimakura by Cospa

    • I don’t think they recycle the eyes since they’re not even the right style. My guess is that they fell behind schedule and hired some extra animators who weren’t familiar with the character designs.

  17. Wow, nice breakdown of the details of the animation. I love your little notes that point out those flaws. It makes them so obvious. A picture is worth a thousand words I suppose. ^ ^
