Fall 2011 Anime Round-up

November 14, 2011 By: Nopy Category: Anime

It’s time for another round-up of the season’s anime. I know I’m a month late to the party, but I attribute that to travelling for 3 weeks and spending 2 weeks catching up on everything. I won’t bore you with the plot summaries, you can find them anywhere, these are just my impressions of the series for Fall 2011 and whether I consider them worth watching or not. If you are new to my blog, note that I don’t include sequels/continuations as I would be watching a story starting in the middle. Seasonal awards will be given out at the end of this post.

Ben-To

The plot sounds amusing, but in practice it was not even close to being funny.

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai

Funny + Sexy = WIN. I was expecting this anime to look good because the character designs were by Buriki, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was really funny too.

Status: watching

Busou Shinki Moon Angel

As everyone has already said, this looks like Angelic Layer and I have to agree. My anime plate is full though, so I’ll have to leave it for some other time.

Status: on hold

C3

This is about as generic as you can get. A guy randomly finds a naked girl in his house and shenanigans happen. If you remember the decade from 1995-2005, this was relatively common. Somewhere along the line there will be some romantic tension.

Status: not watching

Chibi Devi

I wasted 5 minutes of my life watching a girl get bullied and a baby crying.

Status: not watching

Chihayafuru

If karuta were a more exciting game (like Go), then I’d probably enjoy it more.

Status: not watching

Fate/Zero

I liked Fate/Stay Night, but wow, Fate/Zero is several steps higher. The violence, scheming, and cool battle scenes make this well worth the wait every week. The timing of its release was also well thought-out as the teenagers who watched FSN are probably in their 20’s now and FZ definitely targets a more mature audience. Side note: Ilya’s mom looks cool.

Status: watching

Guilty Crown

It follows your average plotline, but I like the animation, music, Inori, and Tsumugi.

Status: watching

Gundam AGE

Most Gundam series are pretty serious, but the happy-go-lucky feel of AGE just doesn’t work for me.

Status: not watching

Hunter x Hunter

I did not watch the original Hunter x Hunter, but I’m sure that if I did when I was 7, I probably would have liked it. Now that I’m 24, it’s just way too childish for me.

Status: not watching

Kimi to Boku

This looks exactly like my daily life in school. Having already lived through it, there’s really no point in watching it too.

Status: not watching

Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon

The weapons look cool, but the heavy focus on fanservice was a bit too much.

Status: not watching

Last Exile -Fam, The Silver Wing-

I can’t remember why I didn’t complete the original Last Exile anime, but I do remember thinking it was cool. This new series has that same feel, but with better animation.

Status: watching

Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!

There was some fighting and lots of manly girls…

Status: not watching

Maken-Ki!

Boobies, panties, and getting beat up by girls. Sounds fun.

Mashiroiro Symphony: The Color of Lovers

This one actually looked nice at first, a lost sister, a mysterious friend, and a search through a district with some beautiful scenery (not to mention the nice artwork). When it got to the last part of the first episode, it all just blew up in my face with a convenient “girls school going coed” plotline to create the harem, and the main female character turning out to be a man hater.

Status: not watching

Mirai Nikki

“Hmm, this looks like a typical shoun-… holy crap, crazy psycho b***h!” That was my reaction to this series. I absolutely love Yuno, and she has now toppled Kaede Fuyou from Shuffle as my favourite crazy girl (a.k.a. yandere). The plot is very captivating as well.

Status: watching

Persona 4 The Animation

I feel like this is lost on me as I have never played any of the Persona games.

Status: not watching

Phi Brain: Kami no Puzzle

Here’s an idea: let the viewer have a shot at solving the puzzles. The issue I have with this anime is that you really can’t tell how hard the puzzles are so it doesn’t feel like the characters are being challenged.

Status: not watching

Tamayura: Hitotose

The Tamayura OVA literally made me fall asleep so I couldn’t finish it. Tamayura: Hitotose is doing the same thing. It’s disappointing because the animation looks beautiful.

Status: not watching

UN-GO

For once, I thought we were going to get a decent mystery anime, but then a boy transforms into a woman and magically pulls the truth from the suspect. I call that cheating, and it ruins the best part of mysteries: solving them.

Awards

In Summer 2011 I handed out some fictional awards to the best and worst of the season and I’m going to be continuing that here.

Rotten Egg: Chibi Devi

Chibi Devi takes the prize for the least impressive anime of the season. It’s aimed at children, but even if I were still a kid, I would not watch an anime that has a crying baby on screen half of the time.

Pearls before Swine: Last Exile -Fam, The Silver Wing-

This seems to be the most underrated series this season. Of the 60+ anime blogs in my RSS feed reader, only 1 has written a post on the series.

Diamond in the Rough: Fate/Zero and Mirai Nikki (tie)

I honestly could not decide which is the best anime of the season between these two. Every week I look forward to both of them and every week I am impressed with what they have to offer. If you only have time to follow two anime a week, then I recommend these two.

  1. I haven’t started everything you’ve listed here and I will pass on them I guess.

So far Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, Last Exile and Fate/Zero are my favorites, I also like Mashiroiro Symphony, Persona 4 and Tamayura ;)

have you only watched the 1st ep of C³? In episode three it is a lot different.

Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon was dropped after the first half of the second ep. Don’t want fto watch the fanservice bombs of this season XD

  2. Ahh..we have very little in common this season. My favorite of the season happens to be Chihayafuru. It actually got me interested in karuta.

  3. I haven’t started any of the Fall series (I’m the type who waits there are more episodes released first) and I will be prioritize on Fate/Zero of cause! I just watched Persona 4 and it’s not bad, non Persona gamers would certainly get confused since the plot’s pretty quick but I quite like it myself (guess we have a different view there). Also, partly I’m watching is also to enjoy their jap voices lol. Mirai Nikki looks quite interesting as well ;D

    • I don’t think I would be able to stand not watching Fate Zero when I know it’s just at my fingertips. Persona4 did lose me pretty fast since I don’t know what’s going on.

      6
  4. Watching Guilty Crown and will probably watch Last Exile – Fam too. And how can I forget Fate/Zero? Yes, it’s definitely on my to-watch list. ^^

  5. I may plan to watch Guilty Crown once the series finishes airing; I am currently watching Fate/Zero, Shana III, Gundam AGE, and Hunter X Hunter.

Fate/Zero, for a prequel having only one solid storyline rather than branches for visual novel, looks pretty promising, and I like the overall serious tone of it so far with nothing silly distracting.

Hunter X Hunter is not all that kiddy; the original manga and first anime adaptation in 1999 are worth having a look. The story actually gets pretty dark after a few arcs (and all the way up to now too).

    • The dark and serious atmosphere in Fate Zero is really captivating. I’m really interested in seeing how it all plays out.

I’m not opposed to giving the original Hunter x Hunter a shot, but the problem is actually finding it.

  6. Hmm, no disagreements here. Hell, I even agree with your choice of Inori. There are only about 3 good shows this season. 2011 was overall average, but had some of the best anime in the last couple of years (Stein;s Gate, Maoka, Penguindrum)

  7. Oh. No Ben-To, Hunter x Hunter, Kimi to Boku, Un-Go. That’s four of the ones I’m watching and enjoying a lot! Un-Go gets better after the first episode. The third and fourth are well-executed.
Marow recently posted..What’s With the Ages, Japan?

    13
    • Out of those four, Un-Go was the closest to making it onto my watchlist. If it weren’t for Inga’s magical powers, I probably would’ve liked it.

      14
  8. You should try watching at least 3 or 4 episodes before dropping an anime XD.

Try giving Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon and C3 a chance.
I think Bandai is trying to cater to the younger market for the gundam segment since it seems that the gundam plotline caters more to the mid teens, and young adults (Wing uptil OO doesnt seem to be for kids). I’m just watching it just for teh lulz atm XD.

Fate/zero is prolly the most talked about anime this season. Story-wise and production wise. If you think guilty crown’s storyline is typical, check out who the writer is =D you’ll be lolling at how similar guilty crown is to the rest of the stuff he’s done

    • The problem with watching that many episodes is time. It’s hard enough for me to even check out every series, much less keep up with them all for 3 or 4 weeks.

I do intend to give a series a second chance if lots of people say it’s worth it. C3 actually sounds like it’s not doing too bad.

      16
  9. From the list I’m watching Haganai, pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it has been so far. Look forward to more of it.

Fate/Zero is on hold until I can watch all of it without waiting for the second half to air next year. Never enjoy stopping a continuous story down the middle for months.

I’m unsure of Gundam AGE, it’s Gundam. I know Gundam shows tend to start really slow and then get things going but this is not capturing me like Gundam 00 or Unicorn did. Will probably end up watching regardless.

I read the Mirai Nikki manga, I did not like most of the characters, plus I already know how it gets resolved making me not want to spend time on it again. Pretty cool experience though, much darker than I would have thought.

Persona 4 is definitely catered towards the fans of the game, although it can still be enjoyed by those that haven’t played the game.

    • I was suprised with Haganai too, I didn’t expect it to be so funny. This is the first I’ve heard of Fate/Zero being put on hold for a year. I bet it’s going to suck though, just like the cliffhanger at the end of Code Geass season 1.

      18
  10. Why?! Why?! Go and watch Kyoukai Oppai no Horizon! Now! :D

  11. Huh. Considering that I think a lot of the Fall animes are about the same, I can’t necessarily disagree with what you like. I would say this: I think you should (whenever you get a chance) try and watch C3 and Chihayafuru’s next couple of episodes. I think you would get a better sense of whether you’d like it or not (especially C3, since things change a bit drastically)

  12. I havent gotten the chance to watch most of them since im travelling but im managing to keep up with Fate/zero and Guilty crown, they for me are the best.. i think there would be more but ill wait until i can have my peace.

Fate/zero is …. no comment.. the animation is eye candy

    23
    • I definitely recommend Fate/Zero, not only is the animation goo, but the story is really interesting as well. I’m guessing from your tweets that you’re in Kyoto right now, I hope you have fun!

      24
  13. I’m also following Mirai Nikki and Fate/Zero.

From the get-go I enjoyed Fate/Zero, I love the CGs and the idea of battle royale. I’m not really an action fan but I like how it’s the holy grail that they’re after at.

As for Mirai Nikki, similar to you I followed that series because of Yuno. She’s very very entertaining and although it’s gore the comedy and entertainment make up for it.

    • Those two are really the top anime this season, I always look forward to seeing the next episode every week. I actually don’t think the gore in Mirai Nikki is too bad, it adds to the drama factor.

      26
  14. I’m taking a reserved approach to this seasons anime. There’s loads I’d like to watch, but I don’t have the time. So I’m saving them up for Xmas to blast through as well as some from previous seasons.

I’ve been following Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai! and Mashiroiro Symphony weekly because I tend to like VN adaptations.

Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai! is good fun – plus I really enjoyed ‘They are my Noble Masters’ anime which is also a VN by minato soft. Similar characters, different setting, good stuff.

Mashiroiro Symphony is kinda dull if I’m honest but I’m going to see it through to the end. It certainly started out promising then ended up nose diving when all the girls ended up falling for the perfect male lead.

I plan to watch (or watch on and off) Fate/Zero, Persona 4, Last Exile, Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon, Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, Guilty Crown and C3 at some point. Thanks to your post Mirai Nikki sounds wicked so I’ll look that one up too, maybe Maken-Ki!. Argh long list is long ><.

    27
    • I’ve tried leaving some series to Christmas before, but it doesn’t work too well for me. What ends up happening is that I get so caught up with Christmas dinners and stuff that there’s less time for anime.

I was disappointed with how all the girls just fell into the main charater’s lap in Mashiroiro Symphony too, that was the main reason why I decided not to continue watching.

Hopefully you find Mirai Nikki as good as I have.

      28
  15. I really like ‘Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai’ so far. Poor Sena really does get the end of the bamboo stick from Yozora. Unfortunately, I have been rather busy as of late and haven’t had the time to really check out a lot of stuff from the current season. From the things that I have seen, my thoughts mirror most of yours.

  16. I’m reading Mirai Nikki and I finished playing Persona 4 last night. I MIGHT watch the Persona 4 anime, I’m kind of curious, but for Mirai Nikki I’ll stick with manga I think. If the myseteries in Un-Go turn out to be good I’d give it a chance, I’m always willing to drop everything for a good mystery series. Chihayafuru caught my eye, the art style and the fact that it’s a shoujo have really poqued my interest.

I’ve been MEANING to start Working, Shakugan no Shana, and Lupin for quite some time but just have never done it. Lupin is a series I REALLY should watch since I like Detetective/thief stories so much.

The titles I’m MOST likely to watch though are Hunter x Hunter and fate: Zero because those seem like the titles my boyfriend would also enjoy watching as well.

BASICALLY I’m very open minded to what I’ll watch, but I have so little free time I don’t end up watching nearly as much as I’d like. I find myself reading manga more.

    • That is quite a wide range of anime there, you’re certainly more open to different series than most people. I really recommend Fate/Zero, I think both you and your boyfriend would like it.

      32
  17. Wow, Donno how I missed this but I’ll comment anyways.

Fate/Zero was awesome and nicely paced. Love it. Didn’t really like the OP or ED all that much, only the show itself with the OST/BGM.

Guilty Crown is actually surprisingly nice, even with the hype. Keep thinking how much you’d love to rant or ramble about how silly it might seem at times :P. I’m liking where it is going. Such a crazy good anime.

Mirai Nikki is quite awesome. One of the shows I want to keep watching regardless. Everything about this is just awesome. Though, I’m still haunted by that rape scene….bah….constantly in my mind -.-

Last Exile – Silver Wing, also awesome. Seeing this an an improvement to the first and finding the stepped up designs nicely placed. The music keeps making me come back to this show…too bad the updates are hiccuping.

Moon Angel? It had its moments. I’ll be honest…I really want to hype it but Konami milked it hard. I still recommend watching it, just the awkward silliness of it can get to you….i.e the cat part. It’s great for what it is, but the shortness of it demands more. And ya, it can partner up with Angelic Layer with ease….needs more battles at the arcade or tournaments, like from the game or AL.

The rest didn’t really catch my attention.

    • I actually have half of a rant post on Guilty Crown written. It’s one of those shows that’s so good at being bad that you can’t stop watching it.

I’ll have to see if I can fit in Moon Angel sometime, the similarities to Angelic Layer are nice, but the story just didn’t really grab my attention.
