Random Ramblings of The Week

January 10, 2011 By: Nopy Category: Personal

Every once in a while I take a break from the blogging world, which is why sometimes you won’t see me for a week, but my latest absence was neither planned nor expected. Last week my computer died on me after years of faithful service. Of course, being an engineer, I thought fixing it would be no problem. I was wrong.

I had been getting error messages relating to hardware recently so when my computer finally belly-upped, checking all of the parts and connections was the first thing I did. I found a couple of problems with the help of my brother, but when those were fixed, my computer still wouldn’t run. After several days of testing, I concluded that the hardware was fine and there was something wrong with the software. Well, I don’t know anything about software so I decided to take the easy way out and just wiped my hard drive and reinstalled everything. Unfortunately, I forgot to save some files, some of them being my list of RSS feeds and favorited websites. Don’t worry though, if you’re a regular commenter here, I’m not going to forget you.

My computer problems have also delayed the completion of my grad school applications, so until I get those done, I probably won’t be around for a while more.

In other news, we finally got a fresh layer of snow over the weekend. The old snow was getting brown and gross, you couldn’t tell if you were stepping in dog poo, rabbit poo, squirrel poo, or just plain dirt mixed with snow. I took a few pics on my way to and from home/school/work.

The parks around here always look good in the snow.

Sometimes these plants get buried in the snow and when you jump into what you think is a pile of snow, you get greeted by sharp pointy leaves and branches :(

This abandoned building has no one to clear the snow so the front steps have been completely covered and it doesn’t look like anyone will be able to open the door any time soon. Personally, I think with a little work this place could be a nice cafe, but it’s in a horrible location (there was an attempted murder here a few months back).

The snow in most of the city is now up to or above my knees. Seeing this picture reminds me that I should see if I can return those shoes. I got them on boxing day, but they’re nothing compared to the hiking boots I usually wear. In the past two weeks I’ve fallen down 4 times because of lack of grip, that’s twice as much as I fell in all of last winter.

These piles of snow gradually get bigger as winter drags on, eventually reaching their peak in February/March. I remember digging a tunnel through one of these once as a kid, that probably wasn’t a good idea. I could’ve been crushed if it collapsed and no one would’ve found me until May when the snow melts away.

So while I wasted a lot of time fixing my computer, I’m pushing the deadlines on my applications, and I’m a little sore from those falls, at least now there’s lots of pretty snow. It wasn’t too cold today either, mostly around -15 celsius, perfect for a walk around the city.

  3. Oh no! I hate when computers just die, especially in the middle of a lot of busy stuff. Good luck with grad papers and everything.

    Anyway, glad I don’t have to deal with snow here in CA. I can’t stand the cold.

  4. I had problems too with my PC in these last few weeks…but I managed to pass them. I hate it too when I’m in middle of some project and I have to start all over because the OP System crashed.
    Nice pics of winter you have there. Where I live rains constantly, so imagine how great winter must be…

  6. @Arianna Sterling:
    It’s actually not to bad, and thanks :)

    @Fabrice:
    Glad to see that you’re active around the blogosphere again.

    @Yi:
    Lucky for me the deadlines were still a while away so I had time to get my computer back up and running.

    @Gratian:
    Cold and wet sucks. The cold here isn’t so bad because the air is very dry.

    I’ll send you an email later regarding the link exchange.

  7. Oh some weeks ago we also had a lot of snow here in germany, but now its gone =p

    Im sorry to hear that your pc had a software death, when you were preparing things for your school.
    I love to build up pc’s but when it comes to software issues I can’t do much either :(
    Well, reinstalling sometimes solves the problem.

  8. So far we’ve only had the snow I posted about way back in November. It was up to our knees and it’s the heaviest I’ve ever seen in this area of Scotland.

    Everything closed for the week and driving around in it was lol-tastic, although scary (I hate driving as it is, having the ABS come on makes me nervous at every junction). Since then nothing else fell, but the piles of snow have remained intact and ice was everywhere. That was until yesterday when we finally got rain and it cleared everything away.

    Good luck with your grad school applications. I’ve been on the hunt for jobs myself since I’ll be graduating this summer.

  9. @Fabienne:
    The snow here stays permanently for all of winter.
    Reinstalling seemed to work for my, my computer has been up and running for a few days and it hasn’t had any problems yet.

    @BioToxic:
    There was only one time when I’ve ever seen it rain this time of year, I thought it was the end of the world because it never rains in winter. I actually find the beginning and end of winter are the worst times to drive because you’re driving on layers of ice. At least in the middle of winter you’re driving on snow.
