Beckii Cruel’s 15 Minutes of Fame

Some of you may remember a certain Youtube girl by the name of Magibon which swept otaku communities by storm with her big eyes and love of Japan two years ago. Sadly, her less than attractive looks in real life were revealed on Japanese tv sometime later and her time in the limelight was up. The shock from seeing Magibon’s true form may have stopped some people from watching Youtube girls, but apparently not for long.

With Magibon out of the picture, otaku needed a new white girl to idolize; that’s where Beckii Cruel comes in. Beckii is a teen from the UK who also loves Japan, but instead of uploading videos of her looking into the camera, she came to fame by dancing. You can see her Youtube videos here if you’re interested. Being relatively cute and liked by otaku from all over the interwebs, it was only a matter of time before she made her way to Japan like Magibon did. Beckii has even managed to ink a deal to have a DVD made (titled “This is Beckii Cruel”), and I got some screenshots below.

Since Beckii came to fame through dancing, that’s the main focus of the DVD. Beckii and her family were brought to Japan to film the DVD, where she dances in the kitchen, in the living room, and even in the backyard. It seems like a bit of a waste to go to Japan just to film in these commonly found areas, so the producers took her outside to what seems like a dollar store…

In the video it seemed pretty obvious that Beckii wasn’t really too excited to be there. She did try to smile and laugh, but it seemed really forced.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, they took her to a bookstore too. I don’t know about everyone else, but if I were in Japan a dollar store and book store wouldn’t be very high on my list of things to see.

To be fair though, the producers did take Beckii to some festival and what appears to be Shibuya. I lol’ed at the two guys posing for the camera.

The DVD also contains some footage of Beckii singing while walking down the street. It’s funny to see all the weird looks people give her. She’s also dressed up as a schoolgirl; my guess is it’s to appease all the otaku fans out there. I kinda feel sorry for the girl though, I know I wouldn’t just randomly walk down the street in a foreign country singing a foreign song unless someone was paying me some decent money.

This is probably going to be the peak of Beckii’s fame. If you’ve watched her videos on Youtube and her DVD, you’ll probably get bored of her dancing after a while. Unless she does something new, I predict she will be relatively unknown in a year or two.
